penthouse alteration with arthouse architects
TThe building housing this penthouse apartment was a landmark project of its time - one of the first waterfront luxury apartment buildings constructed in Nelson. It was a new typology for the region and the original floor plan was arranged much like a standard three bedroom suburban house. The alterations for this project were heavy-handed, reorganising the layout to showcase the apartments ample dimensions and give the illusion of a completely open floor plan. Concealed sliding doors allow spaces to flow seamlessly off the gallery corridor, providing subtle demarcations between the social and the private. The clients’ near monastic dedication to simplicity and their desire for a minimalist but warm home was achieved through a simple palette of subtly rich materials and careful detailing. The execution of this project required a rigorous commitment by the builders and joiners to achieve an exceptionally high level of craft - the result is a tribute to their skill.

“This project is a refined example of architecture that is made by taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary. The architects have moulded a fastidiously detailed, wholistic environment into the existing shell. The attention to detail is so complete that it is almost transcendent. It feels like they were aiming for perfection — always a risky approach, but in this case, it was a risk worth taking. The result is aesthetically very beautiful, but the experience is a pervading sense of calm. This level of craft only occurs with aroha, commitment, and respect. It is a testament to all involved.”
